Sócrates Award
In addition to its eight trophies – the Ballon d’Or organisation created the Sócrates Award in 2022, in collaboration with Peace and Sport and the Sócrates family, to reflect the fundamental changes in our society in terms of responsible support for all those committed to inclusion and equal opportunities.
Inspired by the incredible life story of Brazilian doctor and football great Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, who was not only renowned for his skills on the pitch but also for his commitment to social causes, the Sócrates Award honors players who use their influence and resources to make a positive impact off the field. Every year, the award will identify the best actions in support of the community by committed champions.
The Sócrates Award serves as a testament to the extraordinary influence footballers can have beyond the game. It celebrates those who leverage their platforms to foster positive societal change, embodying the spirit of Sócrates himself. Through this award, we aim to shine a light on the altruistic endeavours of footballers, inspiring the global community to join in the effort to create a better world.
